Prose is built on a simple principle: your text is yours. Only what you select is sent, only when you ask, and this page documents exactly where it goes in each mode.

Overview

Prose is a Chrome extension that fixes your text directly where you type. It is designed to be invisible: no account required to start, no data collected by default, no background activity.

The short version: with your own API key, your text goes straight from your browser to the AI provider you chose. Prose servers are never in the loop, and you can verify it in the extension's published code. With Prose credits, your selected text passes through the Prose server, which forwards it to the provider and returns your fix.

This policy explains exactly what Prose handles in each mode, and why.

Data collected

Prose collects almost nothing. Here is the full list:

  • Your email address, only if you sign in to use Prose credits. Used solely for authentication via PIN code.
  • Credit balance, the number of credits remaining in your account, stored server-side to process fix requests.
  • Extension settings, your chosen AI provider, model preference, and active mode. Stored locally in your browser using chrome.storage.local.

We do not collect your name, your location, or your browsing history. What happens to the text you fix is described mode by mode in the next section.

How your text is used

When you select text and choose "Fix my text," only the text you selected is sent, and only at that moment. The path depends on the mode you use:

  • With your own API key: your text travels from your browser directly to the AI provider you configured (OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google), and the fixed version comes back to your browser. Prose servers are not in the loop at any point. This is verifiable in the extension's published code.
  • With Prose credits: your selected text is sent from your browser to the Prose server, which forwards it to the AI provider and returns the fixed version to your browser.
In both modes: the extension sends nothing in the background. No page content, no browsing data, no analytics. It only acts on the text you selected, when you ask. The corrected text is returned to your clipboard so you can paste it: this replaces whatever your clipboard previously contained, on your device.

API keys

If you bring your own API key, it is stored exclusively in chrome.storage.local, a sandboxed environment accessible only to Prose. No other extension can read it. Your key is never sent to Prose servers.

  • Keys are transmitted directly to your chosen AI provider (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google).
  • Prose applies a strict Content Security Policy (CSP) to prevent injection attacks.
  • We recommend setting hard usage caps in your provider dashboard as a best practice.

Credits & billing

If you purchase Prose credits, we collect your email address to create and manage your account. Payments are processed by our payment provider. We do not store your card details.

We retain your email address and credit balance for as long as your account is active. You can request deletion at any time by contacting us.

Third parties

Prose interacts with the following third parties depending on your setup:

  • Vercel, which hosts the Prose server. In credit mode, your fix requests transit through it; it also handles PIN sign-in and credit balance.
  • OpenAI, if you use an OpenAI key or Prose credits with GPT models.
  • Anthropic, if you use a Claude API key.
  • Google, if you use a Gemini API key.
  • Stripe, our payment processor, for credit purchases only.

Each provider has its own privacy policy governing how they handle API requests. We recommend reviewing them if you have concerns.

Updates

August 17, 2026. Earlier versions of this page said your text never reaches Prose servers. That was accurate when you use your own API key, but not in credit mode: there, your selected text passes through the Prose server, which forwards it to the AI provider. We identified the gap during an internal review and corrected this page the same day to describe both paths exactly. The extension's behavior has not changed; this page now matches it precisely.
